Internship Overview:

Our internship program will consist of an intern putting on a healthy living program for children in Montezuma County in response to the needs of health related education for the youth of Montezuma County. We are an agricultural community but not all kids know where their food comes from. That is why we will make connections in how food is produced as well as best practices for food selection and preparation into this program. This intern would also have an opportunity to get hands-on experience with working with children, planning programs, executing the program, and evaluating program effectiveness for Montezuma County.

Goals, Scope and Objectives:

The proposed internship goal is to educate children in Montezuma County about healthy eating habits. We would like to see a program developed to help children in Montezuma County understand where their food comes from and how to prepare that food to make it healthy. We would like this to be split into three different workshops with one of the workshops held on the Ute Mountain Reservation. Each workshop would be built on top of each other. The first workshop would focus on helping young people understand where their food comes from. This could include touring different agriculture industries (ie: feed lot, large acreage farm, orchard). The second workshop would focus on the challenges that the agriculture industry is facing in southwestern Colorado, like water usage. Then the final workshop would focus on understanding healthy eating habits where youth would create a meal that is easy, full of flavor, and healthy.

With which stakeholder group(s) will the intern work?

Montezuma County 4-H program will be the main group the intern works with under the guidance of the 4-H Youth Development Extension Specialist.

What student learning outcomes do you anticipate and what are the opportunities for professional development?

The student intern will gain skills in how to identify community needs and how to design and execute a successful program to meet identified needs. They will be able to develop skills of communication with other entities (e.g. School to Farm , local food pantries and WIC), lesson development, science-based knowledge about healthy eating, and appropriate youth interaction.
Opportunities for professional development. In addition to learning about the 4-H program and how to administer youth programming we will show them the broad breadth of what Extension does through tours and meetings with local entities such as the Southwestern Colorado Research Center, Mancos and High Desert Conservation District, Dolores Water Conservation District.
