The DVM students spend half of the internship as certified technicians in the NPIP program visiting producers, evaluating biosecurity practices and testing the birds for various diseases of concern. 25 % of the internship is spent on health checks of birds coming on to county fairgrounds to be shown in the 4-H classes. The students have a chance to discuss health and husbandry as they work with the young bird owners and get to know the county Extension agents. 25% of their time will be working with the state DVM and Veterinary Medical Officers on avian disease investigations. The students will spend about 10 hours producing an educational health piece for the public that will be useful for the county Extension agents.
