Organic vegetable variety trials, nutrition education, and community outreach

Internship goals:
– Gain experience in many facets of organic vegetable farming including irrigation management, cultivation, soil health, and harvest of a variety of crop types.
– Learn how to organize and implement extension/outreach activities.
– Understand how non-profit organizations work to reduce food insecurity.
– Become educated in nutrition and nutrition education as it pertains to vegetable variety trials.
– Build relationships with personnel at the Western Colorado Research Center and Area Extension Offices.

Internship Scope:
The scope of this work is to contribute to the promotion of local agriculture economies through regionally-based vegetable variety trial data dissemination and educating underrepresented consumers.

Internship objectives:
– Engage in daily research station operations pertaining to organic farm management and vegetable variety trial data collection
– Help plan and participate in the summer field day at OARS-RM
– Assist in nutrition education activities
– Help to manage produce distribution program to food insecure populations
