Internship Overview:

The Grand County Pioneer Museum is seeking an intern to help research, plan, and install a pioneer garden, as well as develop interpretive material for both visitors and docents. Located in Hot Sulphur Springs, the museum is comprised of six historic structures and the Winter Park Ski Train caboose. The Grand County Historical Association hopes to install a pioneer garden, or gardens, on the grounds as a part of the museum’s exhibits and to abate weeds on the property.

Goals, Scope and Objectives:

Working museum volunteers, Colorado Master Gardener, and museum volunteer, the intern will identify and research appropriate plants for a pioneer garden on the Grand County Pioneer Museum grounds. Research will be conducted both on-site and on Colorado State University’s Fort Collins Campus. Once the research is complete, the intern then will help install the garden, and produce an interpretive guide for the garden for visitor and docent use, as well as instruct the local community on regional horticulture.

What student learning outcomes do you anticipate and what are the opportunities for professional development?

Ability to work with community stakeholders in identifying plants, conducting research, and developing an interpretation of the garden for the museum. The garden will promote the museum’s mission and compliment its master plan.
